Frequently Asked Questions
Common tax questions for Working Holiday Makers in Australia
WHMs pay 15% tax on the first $45,000 of income when working for a registered WHM employer. Income above $45,000 is taxed at 30% (up to $135,000), 37% ($135,001-$190,000), and 45% (over $190,000). Unlike Australian residents, WHMs do NOT get the $18,200 tax-free threshold.
Apply online at ato.gov.au once you have your working holiday visa. You'll need a valid passport and Australian address. Your TFN arrives within 28 days. Without a TFN, your employer must withhold tax at 45%. You have 28 days after starting work to provide your TFN.
Lodge between July 1 and October 31 for the previous financial year (July-June). You can use myTax through myGov (free) or a registered tax agent. You can lodge from anywhere in the world - you don't need to be in Australia. If leaving Australia before June 30, you can lodge an early tax return.
If you earned less than $45,001 on a WHM visa, you can submit a 'Non-lodgment advice' through ATO Online instead of a full tax return. However, if you want to claim deductions and get a refund, you should lodge a return.
If your employer isn't registered with the ATO as a WHM employer, they must withhold tax at foreign resident rates (30% from the first dollar instead of 15%). This means you'll have more tax withheld. You may be able to claim back the difference when you lodge your tax return.
Common deductions include: work uniforms and laundry costs, tools and equipment (items over $300 must be depreciated), travel between work sites (not home to work), self-education related to your current job, and tax agent fees. Keep receipts for claims over $300 and records for 5 years.
For 2024-25, the cents per kilometre method is 88 cents per km for up to 5,000 km. This covers fuel, registration, insurance, and depreciation. You can only claim travel between work sites or to clients - not commuting from home to your regular workplace.
Yes! Working Holiday Makers are exempt from the 2% Medicare levy. This is because WHMs are generally not eligible for Medicare benefits. Make sure your employer isn't incorrectly deducting Medicare levy from your pay.
Possibly. Following the 2021 Addy case, nationals from Non-Discrimination Article (NDA) countries (UK, Germany, Japan, Chile, Finland, Israel, Norway, Turkey) who are Australian TAX RESIDENTS may be taxed at resident rates and get the $18,200 threshold. Most WHMs aren't tax residents, but if you stayed 6+ months in one place, consult a tax professional.
Apply for a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP) through the ATO after your visa expires and you've left Australia. WHMs pay 65% tax on DASP. Apply within 6 months of leaving to prevent your super being transferred to the ATO. You'll need your passport, visa details, and super fund information.
